DIY Fence Staining Tips
Before we began offering fencing services, my husband Jeff and I maintained our own fence, so I have hands-on experience as well as what I see our professional crew do. And, at this point, I almost consider myself a stain sprayer expert because I’ve mastered the motion of applying with wood grain and now avoid the temptation of spraying my name on the fence, just because it’s fun.
Tip #1 – Invest in a good sprayer
I’ve used the paint roller method before…never again. Not only is it back-breaking, it takes forever. And paint brushes worked for Tom Sawyer in 1845, but now we have the technology, so let’s use it. I reserve my paintbrush for areas where I’m not comfortable using a sprayer such as the area the butts up against the house. When buying a sprayer, do your research. Although we use industrial sprayers, there are several good, and extremely affordable, sprayers available for a few hundred dollars that work perfectly well for occasional use.
Tip #2 – Don’t rush the prep work
You need to prepare the surface before staining or painting a fence. If you skip this step, you will be sorry and potentially waste a lot of money redoing the project. Be sure all dirt is removed. The wood needs to be free of dirt for the stain to adhere properly. Be sure to sand down any splintered areas. We recommend using a pressure washer with wood/deck cleaner to clean the area. Be sure to wait a few days before staining to let the wood dry completely. Along those same lines, check the weather report before scheduling the project. If it rains, you’ll want to postpone the project for a few days.
Tip #3 – Mix your paint together
I give our crew the credit for this last tip. If you know you are going to use several gallons of paint or stain, purchase a larger bucket and mix the paint together before you start. This is an easy way to guarantee the color will be consistent across your entire fence.
If you decide the project is too big or maybe it gets too hot and you want to have it magically finished for you, give us a call. We are ready to help with your fencing project and any other exterior services you need.
