There are hundreds of available coatings for metal roofing: water-borne acrylic, solvent-borne aluminum, rubberized aluminum, solvent-borne styrene-ethylene butylene styrene (SBS) white, polyurethane, and a multitude of others that are typically identified by the type of resin that is contained in the coating. While many metal roofs come with already applied coating, they aren’t always the proper coating needed. So there are many after market coatings available that offer special advantages for general or specific needs.

There has been a big surge of new after market “paint on” products for residential asphalt shingles. There are several advantages to asphalt roof coating, such as: energy efficiency, better insulation, and an extending to the life of your roof. There is an ongoing debate on whether these products really perform as they describe. Some frugal homeowners are using the coating as a cheaper alternative to having to re-roof. However merely covering a damaged roof with a coating is a short-term fix with big potential consequences. There are certain individuals that may benefit from asphalt coating.
