What Does a Synthetic Roofing Underlayment Do?

Few homeowners give their roof much consideration. If there’s something overhead, they think that’s enough. However, knowing what that material accomplishes is important. An underlayment, for example, can do a lot to protect your home. Roof underlayment commonly referred to as “felt paper,” is the first layer of a roof. Experienced roofers will put down underlayment before any shingles or other roofing materials.

What it Does

Underlayment is the first step in the waterproofing process. If you completely forego underlayment, you risk extensive leaks and water damage to your roof. Originally, underlayment was laid down to prevent sap leaking from the wood underneath the roofing material. The sap would break down the asphalt shingles and cause deterioration prematurely.

Another common reason for underlayment is to protect both the wood and asphalt shingles. In unusually hot areas of the country, the shingles would melt into the wood. It was easier to lay an extra layer of felt protection. It was also easier for the next job. Should the roof require replacement, the shingles could be easily removed.

Synthetic vs. Traditional

No matter your choice, you need some kind of underlayment. Your choices are traditional felt – often known as organic felt – or synthetic felt.

Traditional felt is considered the tried and tested method of underlayment. It’s often an automatic choice for roofing experts. This specific underlayment is cost-effective, easy to install, and readily available.

Synthetic underlayment, on the other hand, is relatively new to the roofing industry. The technology boasts numerous advantages over the more traditional alternative. For example, synthetic underlayment resists more water and lasts longer, especially against ultraviolet light.
