How to Prevent Your Roof from Sagging

Categories:

Sagging roofSagging is a sure sign that your roof is in trouble. But how do you prevent your roof from sagging in the first place? There are some simple things you can do to prevent this costly issue. Peak Roofing & Construction urges you that if your roof looks to be uneven, do not step on top of it. The rafters may be damaged and could suddenly collapse underneath you. The following tips are preventative measures. If your roof is already sagging, call us immediately for roof repair.

Check Your Ceiling Joist Connectors

Ceiling joists are beams of wood that run parallel along the edge of the ceiling. They join the walls of your home and help support the weight of your roof. Ceiling joists can become weakened with age, water damage, or general wear and tear. If they begin to rot, the screws will loosen and can cause the weight of your roof to further deteriorate the support. This leads to root sag. Perform regular maintenance and inspection of your roof so that you can repair or replace ceiling joist connectors before your roof begins to wear them out.

Lighten the Load

Sometimes the roof will sag due to the weight of the roof itself. This can be because of the type of tiles (such as tile) or if snow or water is pooling on top of your roof. You can prevent this buildup by routinely clearing off roof debris that can contribute to the pooling of water and snow buildup. You can also replace the tiles with a lighter alternative such as asphalt or metal.
