This Thursday, we’ll take the day off and celebrate the freedom we enjoy in America. Many of us started last weekend or are heading out to see the incredible fireworks tonight at Addison Kaboom Town. Of course, we know professional displays like Kaboom Town are thoroughly monitored for safety. But what about the DIY pyrotechnics (both the legal and illegal ones) in driveways and backyards? According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), fireworks start 1,300 structure fires each year. Simply put, fireworks and roofs don’t mix, and home fireworks safety should be the #1 concern of the budding enthusiast.
If you watch fireworks sparks or debris fall on a roof and find yourself holding your breath for a moment, you already understand the danger. Part of the problem is false confidence in roofing materials. Granted, exterior materials like concrete tiles and metal roofing are fireproof. And, asphalt shingles are fire resistant (although with enough heat they are flammable). However, the materials underneath such as the underlayment and wood decking are not. As a result, if there are cracks or missing shingles and tiles, fireworks can ignite roofs.
2019 is a dangerous fireworks year
Fireworks safety in Texas has been a hot topic in recent years, and 2019 promises to be no different. While homes and buildings are lost each year due to unsafe use of fireworks, this year holds an even greater risk. Recent hail, rain, and high winds in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex (especially in Plano, McKinney, and Frisco) left severely damaged roofs throughout the area. Most are not yet repaired and are at-risk.
Protect your roof
If you live in an area affected by the recent storms and have not had your roof inspected, call for a free roof inspection today. If you are unable to get it done before your fireworks display, consider moving the fun to an alternate location this year or watching a professionally choreographed display. If you can’t resist, use caution and move as far away as possible…hundreds of feet at least. Remember, this simple decision can make all the difference in the safety of your home and family. Home fireworks safety is that important.
