DIY Roof Repair: Patching a Leak
Small leaks can cause big problems for homeowners. Water damage can build up over time and roofers can cost more than you can budget. Not all leaks require professional repair. When you have a small crack or leak in your roof, you can patch it rather simply using a few tools and materials.
Where Leaks Are Located
Leaks generally appear where different materials join to your roof. For example, if your roofing shingles meet rolled roofing or around vents or windows. If you need help determining the location of a leak, go into the attic with a flashlight during a rainstorm. If you do not want to wait until the next downpour, have someone run the hose on your roof while you look in the attic for the leak location.
Tools Needed
When you are patching the small leak, you can use some simple tools that you may already have in your toolbox.
You will need:
- Gloves
- Eye Protection
- Ladder
- Cleaning Brush
- Trough or applicator
- Wet Patch
- Patch fabric
- Clear sealant
Step-By-Step Guide to Roof Patching:
- Ensure you follow safety precautions on your ladder and put on eye protection.
- Clean off the area to be patched with your brush. No need to clean anything that is stuck to the location, only debris that will easily be wiped away.
- Layer the wet patch material on the area about ¼ inch thick and spread evenly, feathering out the edges.
- Place a small piece of patch fabric on top of the wet patch to re-enforce the seal.
- Place another layer of wet patch, fully covering your patch fabric. Smooth out evenly so water will not pool around the area.
- Place layer of clear sealant on top to help seal and protect the patch.
