Winter Roofing in Texas? Yes. No. Maybe.

This is the time of year when we get calls from people all over DFW who know they need their roof replaced but question whether it’s a good idea during the winter months. And, they get my standard answer: “Yes. No. Maybe. Let’s talk some more.” This is because every situation is different.

Roof and Gutters

When you should replace roofs in winter

Three main factors determine if a winter roof replacement is wise. First, is where you live. The Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex (including Frisco, Plano, and McKinney) as well as cities south of it experience a form of winter that provides ample opportunities for temperatures to be warm enough to successfully install roofing during the winter. We’ve been a trusted Dallas roofing company for more than 30 years, and we’re always busy year round.

The second factor is the type of roofing material you plan to use. Standard asphalt shingles should be installed when temperatures will be 40 degrees or higher during installation and for several days following. Fortunately, this is most days in North Texas. Tile and slate become more brittle in freezing temperatures, but they have more leeway than shingles and can be installed as long as it is above freezing on the day of installation. Metal roofs can be installed regardless of the temperature, if proper cold-weather installation techniques are followed. Commercial, single-ply roofing materials (TPO and PVC) also can be installed if above freezing, but the warmer the better. The key is to make sure the installation follows the instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure you don’t void the warranty.

Lastly, you need to determine how quickly you need the replacement. If replacing the roof becomes critical, then it should be replaced immediately. With the right planning and attention, it can be replaced without concern. The roofer can take additional steps, if necessary, like tenting the roof or doing temporary repairs like tarping until the weather improves.

Yes. No. Maybe.

If a home or business owner is flexible, the answer is typically “yes”. Thankfully, we live in an area of the country where roofs can be safely installed year-round, although you might need to shift the installation date a few days if weather dictates. We routinely install roofing in Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Allen and throughout north DFW all winter long.

A “maybe” scenario for wintertime is when the cost of temporary patching and repairs becomes too costly compared to replacing the roof. A reputable roofer will try to avoid having you pay for temporary repairs only to turn around a month later and replace the roof.

The situation that typically results in a “no” for me is an abnormally cold winter. Peak Roofing & Construction constantly watches weather patterns. If we see trends we don’t like, we will postpone projects. There are also certain times, specifically in January and February, that we shy away from based on past experience of inclement weather for extended periods of time.

Whatever the situation, it starts with a call and a FREE inspection from one of our experienced roof technicians.
