What Are Your Windows Telling You

Categories: Windows

could your windows need replacement I remember being excited, waiting for our son to say his first words. For some reason, I thought life would magically become easier because I’d know exactly what he wanted or needed, and I wouldn’t have to guess. Boy was I wrong. Even after he learned to talk, I still had to read his body language and look for additional non-verbal cues to help determine his wants or needs. Your windows are no different. Could your home be in distress because your windows need replacement but you haven’t been paying attention to what it is saying?

High quality, properly installed windows should last about 20 years. But if they are older than that, it may be time to pay closer attention to them.

Windows are telling you there’s something wrong

If a window looks to be sagging, won’t stay open, or is foggy (showing condensation on the inside), then it may need to be repaired or replaced. On the other hand, if a tiny amount of air is seeping into the home, it may only need to have the weather stripping repaired to quiet the whistling noise.

Windows are begging for a facelift

Some homeowners are more beauty conscious than others. Just like a few of my friends, looks matter and they want to use it to their advantage. Windows are the same way.  If the outside (or inside) aesthetics of a home have been updated, it may be time to give the windows a fresh new look as well. For example, if you started out with standard windows that slide open, but updated your home to a more modern look, you might want to replace those dated windows with a fixed sash window.

Windows wanting to help financially

Your windows have a huge role in keeping your electric bill in check. according to Energy.gov, heat gain and loss through windows are responsible for 25%–30% of residential heating and cooling energy use. That’s a lot of money. By replacing old or inefficient windows with new energy-saving ones offer immediate benefits. They also serve as a great selling point if you decide to sell your home.
