Tips for DIY Roof Maintenance
It’s finally summer, and you need to do some roof maintenance before those Texas thunderstorms put a leak in your happy sunny summer days. The roof can be an intimidating and pricey item to fix if necessary- taking away from your summer recreation budget. Peak Roofing & Construction can help save you money with some simple tips for “Do It Yourself” roof maintenance.
1. Gutters and Downspouts
First, obtain a sturdy and stable ladder. Be sure you always have a safety buddy stabilizing the ladder as you climb. Next, you will want to check your gutter system, since it is the first part of the roof you will typically come across. Remove any loose debris and large objects from in and around your gutters. Don’t simply squirt everything down the downspout, as there could be an out-of-view clog that may become even worse. After the large debris is removed, lightly scrub the gutters and surrounding soffits and fascia. Remove any dirt and algae with water and light detergent.
2. Loose Debris
Remove all branches, leaves, or any other large debris from your roof itself. Debris on the roof can lead to growth of unwanted mold, mildew, or algae and deteriorate the roof from the inside out. You also want to make sure that your roof is now clear to provide for a better inspection.
3. Mold, Mildew and Algae Removal
Purchase a mold, mildew, and algae remover at your local hardware store. Cover the area thoroughly; let it sit per the instructions and then rinse off with a hose. Make sure to re-inspect the area once it dries. Sometimes mold can become hard to see when wet and up against your dark asphalt shingles.
