Some Simple Fixes You Can Do to Your Roof This Weekend

Simple FixesKeeping your roof in great condition is what we at Peak Roofing & Construction do best. We understand that extensive roof repair can be costly, but there are simple fixes that can be accomplished with just a little money and time. These repairs can save you money down the line and will keep your home looking its best.

Cleaning and Clearing

You might be surprised at just how much debris a roof can accumulate throughout the year. Trees will drop branches, leaves, and other waste onto your home from above. Dirt and grit can collect around gables and give your home a dingy, tired appearance. Clearing off this debris requires a good push broom, some garbage bags, and a pair of work gloves. Unless your roof is exceptionally large, this task can be finished in a couple hours. While you are on the roof, look for any loose shingles or other damage that might be evident. A visual examination is where many simple fixes begin.

Replacing Broken Shingles

Broken shingles are not able to protect your roof’s interior structure and so have to be replaced once identified. You will need to following tools:

  • A pry bar intended for removing shingles and nails
  • A box of replacement shingles closely matching existing ones
  • A hammer and roofing nails
  • A utility knife

Begin by prying off the broken shingle; you may need to remove the nails from nearby tiles in order to accomplish this. Place the new shingle in its place, trimming a notch to fit around any nails that could not be removed. Use at least four nails to secure the new shingle and discard the old one.
