Peak Roofing Basics: The Importance of Selecting the Right Roofing Underlayment
Your roof is designed to protect your house. But what protects your roof? Obviously, the shingles, tiles or metal do the brunt of the work, but they are just a part of the overall roofing system that keeps your home dry and protected. Selecting the right roofing underlayment is an important component of the roofing system.
Directly installed below the exterior roofing material, the roofing underlayment is either weather resistant or waterproof and its primary function is to prevent moisture from entering your home during severe weather.
Types of underlayment
In the Dallas – Fort Worth area, there are three types of underlayment used on roofing projects.
- Asphalt-saturated felt (felt or tar paper underlayment) – It is the most cost-effective underlayment and is classified by weight based on how much asphalt is soaked into the paper.
- Synthetic (non-bitumen synthetic underlayment) – It is similar to felt but instead of using asphalt as the stiffening material, fiberglass scrim is applied. It is the same material that is used for the standard FedEx envelopes.
- Rubberized asphalt – The highest quality underlayment, this self-adhered membrane is used in combination with one of the other two types of underlayment. It is normally applied to the critical areas of the roof, the ridges, valleys, and eaves.
Deciding which underlayment is right for you?
Because cost is normally the biggest factor with most projects, at Peak Roofing & Construction, we recommend using a high-quality synthetic underlayment for the field portion of the roof and a rubberized asphalt underlayment at the critical areas of the roof. It’s easy to spot homes that use our underlayment, just look for the Peak logo on the roof. The felt underlayment used by Peak and most other reputable roofers is capable of withstanding normal Texas weather conditions. However, for homes that have tile roofing, we suggest using a more secure type of underlayment.
