The Roof Insurance Claims Process Made Simple
Waking up to any damage to the roof can be stressful for homeowners. The costs alone to repair significant roof damage can be devastating. And of course, the insurance claims process doesn’t make things any easier. Insurance can often be confusing. To ensure the insurance process is as simple as possible, Peak Roofing & Construction recommends you follow these tips.
The Process
For many homeowners, starting the insurance claim process can be overwhelming and even intimidating. The insurance company is looking to spend as little as possible, but you may need that money soon.
The first step is to contact your insurance company and schedule an appointment with an adjuster. This may seem like a roofing assessment, but the insurance company will want to perform their own evaluation. After the assessment, the insurance company should send a summary of the damages and the first check. Use this check to begin the repair process.
Filing Tips
First off, it’s important to consider what your policy covers. If your roof is less than 10-years-old, your insurance policy may cover the full damage or repairs. Older than 10-years-old, however, and you may only receive a reimbursement check for the depreciated value. This value takes age and wear into consideration. The amount will be significantly less.
Next, provide proper documentation for your claim. Take “before” and “after” photographs of your roof and its damage. Update these pictures following maintenance or repairs. When you file a claim, send the images along with the paperwork.
Finally, select a contractor who has insurance expertise. Many roofing companies will work with the insurance company to achieve a favorable outcome.
