Roof Blistering: Understanding Your Pain Point

There are so many issues that can come up with a roof that, if not monitored, can cause degradation. Roof blistering is one of them. If you’re not familiar with the term, roof blistering is basically a pocket of air trapped between the plies of built-up or modified bitumen roof membrane. If this happens, you’re in for some serious challenges.

The Causes of Blistering

Well, a few things.

One of the reasons blistering occurs is because asphalt gas, which is volatile, is formed inside these little nooks and crannies by overheating. That said, they usually start as lamination voids and get bigger over time because of thermal expansion due to water vapor contraction.

Sometimes, blisters can fill with water without causing leaks. However, they can become a problem if the water freezes, which leads to expansion and splitting of the roof membrane.

If you have flat roof membrane (low slope roof), roof blistering can also be caused by poor workmanship during installation. But this isn’t the case with asphalt shingles. That’s usually a result of improper ventilation.

Poor ventilation below the roof is another thing to be mindful of. This causes the roof deck to overheat, which prevents the shingles from releasing the heat they absorb from the sun.

Once the asphalt in the shingles heats up to a terribly hot temperature, the asphalt begins to release small amounts of gas. Not good. The gasses become trapped within the shingle and this forms the blister.

The Effects of Blistering

Roof blistering shortens the life of your roof. Specifically, your roof becomes stretched and distended. This causes the protective roof granules or gravel surfacing to disintegrate, which results in accelerated UV damage to your shingles. And this causes the shingles to delaminate, crack, and fall off. Not pretty.

When you have a patchy roof with missing shingles, your house is exposed to even further damage, especially if it rains, storms, or snows. That’s why roof blistering is so important to understand and stay on top of.
