Is Your Siding Energy Efficient?

Categories: Siding

Siding Energy EfficientOne of the moments I dread the most each month is the arrival of the electric bill. And in August, I’d go so far as to say it makes my stomach turn. One of the biggest things you can do to keep the bills bearable (other than possibly turning your home into a sweat lodge) is take all the energy efficiency measures possible. This includes making sure your siding is doing its job.

So which type of siding is best for energy efficiency? Honestly, there is not a perfect choice. But picking the right siding approach makes a significant difference.

Measuring energy efficiency

Energy efficiency in a building material is measured by an R-value. You want the highest R-value available, or that you can afford. I’ve been told the minimum R-value for residential walls is an R-13. However, an R-15 or R-18 is achievable. (Achieving this is a result of a specific wall structure and insulation approach, not based on the type of siding.) Siding material alone is rated less than 1 R-value.

Increasing the R-value of siding

So how do you make a notable difference in your energy efficiency with siding? The magic is in the insulation. Quality, foam insulation on the interior and foam-backed siding can increase the siding’s R-value by 3 or 4. Those are numbers that will reflect in your monthly bill.

Replacing old siding

When it’s time to replace your old siding, you have a great opportunity to pick a high efficiency, insulated siding. I also recommend considering installing a house wrap if you don’t have one. Together, they reduce the moisture in the walls and close gaps that might exist. Combined with interior spray foam, you can count on your electric bill going down. In some cases, we’ve seen a considerable savings.
