Impact Resistant Shingles
Everything is bigger in Texas. Our storms are no exception. Not only do we have big windstorms, big thunderstorms, and big hailstorms but we also have a lot of them. Hail, falling limbs, and high winds all put your roof at risk for damage.
So what can you do? If your house’s roofing structure is designed for shingles, the most common approach is replacing your standard-grade shingles with impact-resistant (also called “IR”) ones. In Texas, most homeowners choose Class 4 shingles. These impact-resistant shingles are designed to stand-up to most heavy storms. No material is guaranteed against damage, especially when we have an abnormally destructive hailstorm or tornado-level winds. But Class 4 shingles go a long way in helping extend the life of a roof. Even better, they often result in avoiding a costly roof replacement when hail or wind tears through your neighborhood. Although they cost moderately more upfront, when you see your neighbors replacing their roofs, and yours remains in-tact, you will know your investment was a wise one.
What makes Class 4 shingles better?
Class 4 shingles are simply built differently. There are two basic design approaches, using elastic polymers as an additive to the asphalt composition or adding a polymer-based mesh to standard-design asphalt shingles. Both approaches add strength and durability. To qualify as a Class 4, the shingles must undergo a test called “the steel ball test,” where a steel ball is dropped onto the shingle multiple times and then is inspected for damage, including water leaks and cracks. The stringent testing criteria ensure the shingles hold-up to severe conditions.
