Have you checked your gutter alignment?
If you stand back and look at your gutters, does your head naturally lean a little? If so, it may be time to level your gutters. Some seamless gutters naturally become misaligned over time. More commonly, it’s a result of being bumped or jostled during gutter cleaning [LINK] or damage from strong winds or debris. Regardless of the cause, you need to take action and have them realigned and inspected to make sure they are still properly attached to your home. That way, you’re prepared when the next “gully washer” comes through Dallas, Fort Worth or Houston.
Why is aligning gutters important?
If gutters are not aligned, they don’t operate correctly. A well-designed gutter system has a small slope, so water is directed to the appropriate downspout. Too great a slope causes water to be pushed to the downspout too quickly. Heavy runoff will be too much volume for the downspout to handle, pushing water over the gutter’s edge instead of being channeled away from your home’s foundation.
How do you know if you need a gutter alignment?
One of the simplest ways is to look outside during a moderate-to-heavy rain. If you are seeing an excessive amount of water overflowing your gutters near the downspouts, then you may have a problem. Note: This also could be a result of debris blocking water flow – either way, it should be checked.
The more accurate way is to drag out the ladder and measuring tape. A recommended pitch is between one to two inches over a forty-foot distance. An even safer approach is having a professional gutter company, like Peak Roofing & Construction, come out to inspect your gutters. Or, if you haven’t had your gutters cleaned recently, I recommend scheduling a cleaning and requesting them to check the gutter system’s pitches during the visit.
Prolonging the life of your gutters
Far too often I hear our gutter crews say a gutter replacement they did is a result of neglect. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, making sure your gutters are clear of debris and working properly goes a long way in extending the life of your gutters.
